The Native Landscaping for Interstate I-70 (just east of Greenfield, Indiana involved a complex Landscape Architectural Master Plan which encompassed paved and natural pathways, wetland grading, tall and short prairie and "dry" and "wet" wetland design.

This "high priority area" design for the "Orchard in Bloom" Garden Show featured a pond with waterfall and patio.  The 45' x 20' garden had to be constructed in three days on top of a parking lot.

A Master Plan Concept Example

Master plan concepts for an Office Building

General
  • Formal in front foundation and natural elsewhere.
  • Inviting image from highway - flagpole with benches.
  • Three gathering spaces: lake, front entry and picnic area.
  • Shade - gathering spaces and parking.
Views
  • Frame the building from highway and future building to the south.
  • Buffer parking and utilities throughout from on and off the site.
Safety
  • Open views for trucks at intersections and nearby airport.
Low Maintenance
  • Trees which don't drop a lot of berries or limbs around parking and don't grow in way of trucks.
  • Shrubs which don't overgrow window and sidewalks.
  • Access to water spigots for ease of watering.
  • Trees and shrubs, etc. not disease and insect prone and are all hardy.
  • Note:  Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance.  Consult maintenance packet for periodic maintenance requirements.
Seasonal Interest
  • Color Year-round with appropriate plants for Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.  See plant selection list for recommendations.
Phasing
  • $19,000 first phase - foundation plantings and trees. Seed only all future expansion areas during the first phase.  
  • For future phases, contact the Landscape Installers who bid first phase and have them give an updated bid on the rest of the landscaping.   
  • Owners to provide annuals and site furniture - picnic tables, benches, urns, wastebaskets, etc.
