Attracting Wildlife
Wildlife can be attracted to your landscape by including a variety of plants specific
to the type of wild life you are wanting to entice. For example, there are a number
of specific plants that can be added to your landscape that attract butterflies and
certain species of birds. Providing flowering plants, shrubs and trees for nesting
and food can also attract certain types of birds.
Of course, adding bird feeders, fountains, pools, watering stations, and bird houses
can attract not only birds but squirrels. Limiting your bird feed to safflower and thistle
seeds will attract a wide variety of local birds, but will "generally" keep
squirrels away because "most" squirrels are not fond of such seeds. You
might also consider adding corn feeders and special features to attract and keep the
squirrels entertained.
If you are wanting to attract other types of wild life, explore their feeding habits
and provide foods and other things that might attract them. For example, deer love
to graze in grassy meadows, munch on fruit from fruit tree, and some are even attracted to
salt blocks generally put our for cattle.
